30th Anniversary Communiqué
The FGC Wukari 30th Anniversary has come and gone. The event was an interesting on which went as summerized below:
Friday 7th November 2008 – Arrival of Old students to Wukari.
A number of old students came in to Wukari on that evening. The y included the first headboy – Hamidu Lawan, the Fist Headgirl: Justice Bikisu and lots of others.
The group from Abuja went to see the Principal only to find out that adequate arrangement was not made to host the event. This was partly due to misinformation between Abuja – Wukari organizing committees. We had to come up with an impromptu agenda to make up for this loss.
Saturday 8th November 2008 – Anniversary Day
8.30 am: Inspection – All old students converged at the school to witness the dormitory inspection. The inspection accorded us the opportunity to see the structures around the school and interact with students. We noticed that the structures needed renovation and facilities like beds, mattresses etc. We also found out that students were not a apt as we used to be in the70’s, 80’s and 90’s.
10.30 am: Aku Uka’s Palace – All the old students went to visit HRM Aku Uka of Wukari. The monarch was thrilled with the fact that old students had returned to honour their alma mater. He gave a story of how he donated his personal land to support the school in the 70’s. He extolled the virtues of Mr. Abia. He encouraged old students not to forget to support the school wherever they are and also to call Wukari their home. He took private interest in the 1st headboy and headgirl whom he referred to as role models.
11.30 am: Dining with the students – Old students returned to dine with the students. We had fried yam and tea for breakfast. While this was going on, the present students got introduced to the old students and received words of encouragement and advise. The headboy and girl pledge to uphold the glory of FGC wukari and fulfil the dreams of founding fathers.
11.45 pm: Interactive Session with Staff – Old students met with the staff of the school to deliberate on the way forward. The staff identified the problems that were immediate and pressing. We found out that the issues that needed attention were lack of adequate learning materials like books (library), science equipment etc. The school’s PTA is donating a bus to ease transport problems. Water supply still needed a solution. The library needed renovation and restocking. We assured the staff we will do what we can to support the school.
2.00pm: Deliberation by old students – Old students discussed a way forward about issues ranging from membership to participation to projects. Suggestions were made, contact persons were appointed. We agreed to:
1. Peg the Foundation Contribution at: N20,000 per old student.
